Book Club Announcements

The next book for the September VIUF bookclub will be:

The Happiest Man on Earth: The Beautiful Life of an Auschwitz Survivor, by  Eddie Jaku 2021 (ISBN# 978-0-06-309768-1)

This is an amazing and uplifting tale about the importance of hope and friendship and also shows the importance of a good education with useful skills that can help keep you alive in dire circumstances. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

We will meet after services on the 4th Sunday in September, so you have plenty of time to read the book before then. (September 26th, right after our zoom service)

October book choice

Since we have all summer to read, the book choice for October is:

The Overstory: A Novel, by Richard Powers

This is an amazing book about trees. Ann Patchett calls it “the best novel ever written about trees, and really just one of the best novels, period.”

The author has won the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Awards and many other honors ,including a MacArthur Fellowship. He lives in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. This book can change “the ways we think about and understand the world around us, at a moment when that is desperately needed” Bill McKibben

Barbara Kingsolver called it ”Monumental….A gigantic fable of genuine truths.”

This book is much longer and so you might want to start reading it over the summer. Kiya Bodding recommended it highly and said it was hard to put down, she liked it so much. But it will take longer to read. I read the Happiest Man in the World in just one night, but the Overstory will take longer than that.

Anyone who wishes is welcome to join us for the book club meetings.

If anyone has other books they’d like to have us read next year, please send Pamela Godt the book name and why you recommend it. This may give others time to read longer books during the summer to discuss next Fall.
